The most popular form of security would be security officers within office buildings, housing apartments, cash and valuable transit security, retail and clubs. However, security can also be in a form of working on applications security as well as other IT securities and human security etc. Security jobs are advertised a lot in recruitment websites, newspapers and security service companies. The security services companies provide already trained and qualified security guards to be contracted out in certain places, whether it is in retail or a personal bodyguard.
In order to become a security officer or to work within the security sector, it is important to gain the Security Industry Authority (SIA) License. The license can be applied for via the SIA website and once completed would need to wait for approval before proceeding with the tests etc.
In order to successfully be approved for an SIA license, it is essential that the individual can prove that he/she can do the job as well as having the relevant qualifications first.
There are training and qualifications within each licensable activities and the level of qualification required would depend on the activity chosen. For example, in order to apply for the door supervising license, the candidate must have at least a level 2 certificate in door supervision, as for the front line close protection license, the person would need to have a level 3 qualification in close protection or in protective security. Some of the qualifications have different awarding bodies, which means the tests may also be slightly different but the qualifications by the end of it are at the same level.
Before applying for a security job, it is important to check that the relevant qualifications are gained first and the SIA license are approved and valid, otherwise the application will only be rejected. Applying for an SIA license can also take time, some applications may take a little over a month, so before quitting any current jobs, make sure the funds are enough to support the living expenses first. SIA licenses are also only valid for a certain period of time and would require renewing, it is also not free so be prepared to pay a fixed fee.
